Dear Hon Secretary and Club Disciplinary Officer,

I am writing to as the Chair of the Leinster Disciplinary Committee. It has come to the attention of the Committee, that there has been a marked increase in the number of incidents of verbal abuse this season.

This abuse has come from players, coaches and supporters and has been directed at players and referees at both adult and underage levels. In some cases this season point lengthy bans - 12 months in one case, and the deduction of 5 points - from participation in all rugby activity have been imposed and upheld. We have no tolerance for such behaviour and will continue to take whatever steps may be required to remove it from the game.

I’m sure you agree that this behaviour has no place in the game of rugby. Not only is it in violation of Law 9.12 A player must not physically or verbally abuse anyone. Verbal abuse includes, but is not limited to: abuse based on religion, colour, national or ethnic origin, sexual orientation, but this behaviour directly contravenes the values of respect and inclusivity upheld by Leinster Rugby and all our clubs and schools.

As this season draws to a close, and tensions run high at semi-finals and finals, I would insist that all players, coaches, supporters and club members are reminded of these values, and that a concentrated effort is made by all to ensure we begin next season with no recurrence of this behaviour.

I have attached the “Respect” campaign poster previously circulated this season, and request again that this is prominently displayed in your club.

I wish you all the best of luck with the remainder of the season.

Yours in rugby,

James McCourt

Chair Disciplinary Committee
